I used to work “for” this guy; the sad realities of your talent-less boss

The Denver Egotist recently responded to a young designer seeking advice on his “Creative” Director. The response was ten sad realities of a creative director. I am sure many of you will agree that this rings true for your current and/or past experiences. The article is hilarious – I couldn’t stop laughing as with each point outlined they nailed people in my past perfectly.

Don’t miss this article: Advice - On Creative Directors

I have been in a Creative Director role and would like to think none of the negatives apply; I guess only my team will tell. There is time in every designers life when they need to make the decision to move into management or stay a designer – those that move-on go on to lead great things, those that stay behind go-on to actually create great things. However, there is that strange situation where someone who is neither talented as a designer nor experienced as a manager gets placed into a Creative Director role. When the universe is just on the verge of collapsing upon itself do you get this wanna-be artist who manages through force and changes all things creative simply as a result of a need to prove themselves as a creative and an authority; at the expense of us all and our work.

  1. We have a new creative person starting next week and it will be her first job. I have saved the link for future reference.

  2. You can control where you work, but never who you work for … that can always change. Best of luck to your new girl — she will have a lot of fun and learn a lot at the same time I am sure.

  3. Ha! At my last job I worked for “someone who is neither talented as a designer nor experienced as a manager (who got) placed into a Creative Director role”. Ironically that same guy is well described in M. Jackson’s Wilkinson’s post “The Asshole Collar”. An experience like that can actually benefit a designer by providing the fire under their ass to find another job.

  4. Yes!! The best incentive to leave a job is when you get that new unexpected boss.
