Why designers are romantics by nature

So, it’s Valentines Day, and most of us should be experts of the day; we are creative by nature. We strive to produce thoughtful creative experiences tailored specifically for our audience with the end result of evoking an actionable emotion. I just took all of the romance out of it, but isn’t that what being romantic is at the end of the day? We do this for a living, a day like Valentine’s should be as simple as putting together a 728×90 banner ad. Our significant other should be loving the day; to go into work knowing their day will be exceptional over others.

Being romantic is the loving side of creativity – so if you are truly creative and demand the best from your work; you should have no excuse on this day. I mean most of us know what makes a good design, we have our bag of tricks that might not initially impress each other but will always knock the socks of most of our clients. This is the same thing, while you might not impress another truly romantics or the person who spends a ridiculous amount of money at Tiffany’s and Co. – just do what you do best and you will knock the socks off of your significant other and their friends and co-workers. While it might be slightly superficial and unimportant, it feels good to look around and sense that you are being treated more special than others. Even the Hallmark haters in the room know that deep down this is true; one of those human nature attributes.

Love 2.0So, go about being romantic like you do about being creative – they are one in the same. A subtle gradient or little white stroke with a drop shadow might be enough of a trend to push a design forward. Take those same small steps that evoke the same small and insignificant emotion that at the end of the day together really make an impact. Get a reservation as opposed to dinner at home, make it a restaurant with a view as opposed to a typical table. Buy something that costs $150.00 at Tiffany’s as opposed to something that costs $250.00 at JC Penny’s – that blue box is a design trend that evokes emotion on a grandiose level. But forgot all of that, because we are truly creative. Make dinner at home but be extremely creative about it. Don’t buy anything and make something yourself, but be extremely creative about it.

The beauty of being creative is that the more creative you are, the more romantic it generally is. Remember, you do creativity for a living; this is an easy no-brainer of a day for you.

  1. Cute post. :) I wish I was hope sipping tea at my house. ::sigh:::

  2. Yeah, this whole working for yourself thing is a nightmare — lol. MarylandMedia opened 2 hours late today due to the snow.
