Personal Reflection: why blog, why question, why communicate?

Recent events had me questioning the objective and purpose of my blog. I started this blog last January with no idea of what it would transform into; do I even know today? Why do I write, what do I write about and, most importantly, who do I write for? I’ve got two objectives with this blog; to give information and to gain information – it is all about insight.

First thing first, who is my audience? My audience is professionals in the web space; those primarily focused on what I’ve coined as “business oriented design”. My audience is not my co-workers, friends or family. When I write, I am often writing for someone who I’ve never met; someone who is asking or answering the same questions as I.

What are these questions and who is asking and answering them? What I typically seek to inquire about is that in which I feel most others in my position are asking – this is subconsciously probably how I am trying to acquire regular readership. Through the forums, blogs and simply chatting it up with colleagues – it has become evident to me that most of “us” have the same questions and concerns. I’ve noticed a trend; popular topics of much debate typically not receiving resolution. The majority of my posts have been to acknowledge these popular topics, expose them and ask the community to help answer them. A majority of my posts are simply open-ended discussions.

Most often, I personally don’t know the answer to the questions I ask. I am looking to those in the industry, in my specific niche within this space, to help provide clarity and resolution. Why do we do what we do, should we do what we are doing? I’ve on several occasions acknowledged this unique time in our industry; one in which is quickly evolving and it is to us to shape and mold – it would be a disservice to the world for us not to ask and debate these crucial questions.

  1. Interesting reflection. I think it is within all of us to ask and answer - to seek insight and provide it. Communication is part of human nature. Who are we? Sometimes we all wonder about that. We are all seekers on our individual and collective journeys.

  2. Check out my Blog, i am exactly embarking on that journey of self-knowledge, please do contribute.

  3. Martin,

I think you do an excellent blog. Just found it today and read all of it! You are writing for me and my business partner who are struggling with the meaning in our jobs daily. We are just putting the finishing touches on a blog that i hope will show the clarity of yours.

for the record i think you get a hard time in the comments. by representing the general opinion well and undisguised, you suffer their knee-jerk reactions from being affronted. But you are right, and information design will one day pay off. it makes other people’s businesses look easy.

  4. Ali, I appreciate your comments — it is great to get them. I am glad you like the site and really hope you keep coming back.
