Valentines Day – A How-To for the Procrastinator or Non-Romantic [Six Simple Steps]

Gentlemen, tomorrow is February 1st– which means we have only 14 days left to prepare for Valentine’s Day. I’ve prepared a quick and dirty 6-step process to help you out and hopefully keep you out of the dog house.

The 6 step process - Quick and Dirty:

  1. Realize that Valentine’s day is Tuesday, February 14th
  2. Make Dinner Reservations
  3. Send Flowers to Work
  4. Breakfast in Bed
  5. Call To Say “I Miss You”
  6. Hide a Surprise Card

1. Realize that Valentine’s day is Tuesday, February 14th
That was easy enough!.

2. Make dinner reservations NOW!
I am serious, stop reading the article (for a minute) and pick up the phone. If you wait even one more day, anywhere worth going is going to be booked leaving you at Tony’s Pizzeria (I know Tony makes a hell of a pizza, she doesn’t want Pizza). Find a place with a view, a view of anything and try and get a seat near the window. I can’t stress this enough, MAKE RESERVATIONS.

3. Send flowers to her work.
I suggest going to (www.1800flowers.com). You can get some roses for under $30. You don’t need roses; this is one time where it is “the thought that counts”. Anything will do, just send something to her place of work so she doesn’t feel left out while all others are being romanced after UPS shows up.

4. Breakfast in bed is the best way to start the morning.
You don’t even have to cook. Getting up early and sneaking some Starbucks back will do the trick. At this point, she would probably even settle for you making her a cup of coffee. The goal here is to start her morning off by helping her – doing something sweet she typically has to do herself.

5. Call her to tell her you miss her (an email is fine too, but not recommended).
She knows you are busy, she is busy too. However, this one time, make the effort to sneak away for five minutes and tell her you were thinking about her. Remind her that now matter how busy the day gets, she is on your mind! I suggest doing this after 2pm; this will give you a chance to ensure those flowers you sent to her office arrived.

6. A Card says a lot!
Go to CVS and break the bank by buying a $1.50 greeting card. Write something sweet (your personal touch). Leave the card somewhere hidden that she will find when you are not around, after she or you have left for work. Good obvious hiding spots are on her drivers’ seat, in her coat or in her purse.

A lot of you Hallmark conspiracy theorist have decided to boycott the day – I think this makes you a little cheap and insensitive. You are right; you don’t need a corporately pre-determined day to expressive yourself, but do it anyway – for her! Look around your cube– little do you know that the jerk next to you is planning something romantic. This day is much like highschool graduation; you just want to go home and get loaded one last time with your buddies; however, your mother has been waiting seventeen years just to see you walk two minutes to get that diploma in hand. This 14th of February would be much more fun if we could just go get loaded with our buddies; however that special someone in your life would really appreciate some sentiment.

They may not be much of a romantic type or even very emotional candid. However, I guarantee you that 90% of them will smile with joy if you surprise them with romance this Valentines Day. Think about how it feels for her co-workers to receive roses at work while she stands around with nothing in hand but a cold cup of coffee. Imagine her delight as she gets to go into the office or call her friends with glee that next day because she can find nothing else to talk about than how romantic her valentine’s was the day before.

It is so easy to make her feel special, why not do it?

Happy Valentines

  1. Might also try http://www.opentable.com - very useful for reservations, and the system works great. They even have a special valentine’s day section.

  2. What do you do if she’s going to be a couple hundred miles away on V-day? (Just kidding, I’ve already got 1-800-flowers.com lined up.)

  3. A couple hundred miles? That is nothing! That is like me driving from DC to Atlantic City (it happens far to often).

Come on Mark, shock the hell out of her and go out there. Might be a little extreme but if it’s romance you are after — I am sure a weekend visit is not out of the question.

  4. Be aware that alot of the lower priced items on 1-800-FLOWERS are not delivered by a florist. They are drop shipped by FED EX or UPS in a box with no vase unless you spring to the extra money for the vase so you need to know your girl because this might not set good with her if others are getting roses arranged in a vase. I have also heard someone talk about how they got chewed out just because he delivered them himself instead of having them delivered (but that just sounds like he had a crazy woman).

Another good thing is to send a a nice flower arrangement the weekend before Valentine’s day and have a card that says “I just couldn’t wait till the 14th!”

  5. D. Coiner — write your own post! HA HA. I love the “I just couldn’t wait till the 14th!”. I am definitely going to do that, awesome idea!

Everyone, please post ideas like this to help the rest of us out. Maybe Newsvine can help make romantics of us all.

  6. good stuff..
